China Travel Prep 2026
Visa-free eligibility, Alipay & WeChat Pay setup, eSIM & VPN, and the essential apps international travelers need — all in one place.
Visa-Free Policy Checker
Auto-detect your eligible visa-free policies
Disclaimer: Visa policies change frequently. This tool provides general guidance based on publicly available information. Always verify with your local Chinese embassy or consulate before traveling.
CRITICAL: Set up connectivity BEFORE entering China!
Without preparation, your phone will have NO internet access upon landing - only expensive roaming calls/SMS. Even pre-downloaded WeChat or Alipay are completely useless without network - you cannot pay, scan QR codes, message, or use any features. Your only fallback will be queuing to buy a local Chinese SIM card at the airport.
Does your phone support eSIM?
Most iPhones (XS and newer) and recent Android flagships support eSIM
Will you rely heavily on local apps?
Like ordering food delivery, using bike-sharing, or receiving packages
How long is your trip?
This affects which solution offers the best value
Payment Survival Guide
Master China's cashless ecosystem
Complete ALL setup steps BEFORE entering China. Once inside, you cannot access Google Play, App Store downloads, or international bank websites.
The Reality: China is 99% Cashless
Your international Visa/Mastercard physical cards are virtually useless. Everyone pays by scanning QR codes. Without WeChat Pay or Alipay, you cannot order food, take taxis, or enter most attractions.
Your Safety Net: Cash
By law, merchants cannot refuse RMB cash. Exchange 500-1000 RMB before entering China. Request small bills (10, 20, 50 yuan)—many vendors have no change for 100s.
Why You Need BOTH Apps
Some merchants only accept one or the other. WeChat is essential for communication and mini-programs; Alipay has better international card support and travel tools.
The App Stack
Your home apps vs. what works in China
Tip: Services with Mini Program run inside WeChat/Alipay - no extra downloads!
Information is updated regularly but policies can change. Always verify with official sources before travel.
