Why 2026

2026 is the easiest year to travel China independently.

China has quietly become one of the easiest countries in Asia for international visitors to travel independently. The 240-hour visa-free transit policy now covers 55 countries and 65 designated ports, and in its first full year it handled more than 40 million international arrivals. For most travelers from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or the EU, you can fly in, spend ten full days exploring, and fly out to a third country — all without touching a visa form. Check your exact eligibility with our visa calculator.

The second thing that changed the game is payments. Alipay and WeChat Pay now both accept international Visa and Mastercard directly, so you can pay for taxis, noodles, museum tickets and high-speed rail the same way 90% of people in China do — by scanning a QR code. Setup takes about ten minutes per app and is best done before you board the plane. Our step-by-step Alipay & WeChat Pay setup guide walks you through both apps, the card limits, and the fee rules.

Getting around is just as smooth: the high-speed rail network connects Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu and dozens of other cities at 350 km/h; DiDi ride-hailing works in English; and metro systems in the major cities accept international cards through Alipay. What still trips people up is the internet — if you rely on Google, Instagram or WhatsApp, you'll want an eSIM or VPN set up before you cross the border. See the full prep checklist.

Discover China exists because the existing guides don't look like the real country any more. We lead with short, honest videos of every destination, so you know exactly what Zhangjiajie's quartz-sandstone pillars or Chongqing's neon skyline actually feel like before you book a flight. Each city page bundles those videos with the practical details that matter to international travelers: booking windows, passport rules at the gate, how to get there from the airport. Start by browsing destinations, save the ones you like, and shape your own trip.
