About This Place
The Ming Tomb is the joint burial site of Emperor Hongwu (Zhu Yuanzhang) and Empress Ma, one of the largest imperial mausoleums in ancient China. Its 2.4-kilometer-long, S-shaped Sacred Way is adorned with exquisite stone sculptures, representing the pinnacle of early Ming architecture and art. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it set the standard for imperial tombs throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its underground palace remains intact and un-looted. For the best experience, enter from Gate 5 (Xiamafang) and follow the central axis to appreciate its grand layout.
